What is on the English & Language Usage section
The TEAS 7 has 170 questions in total, 150 of which are scored — the other 20 are unscored pretest items mixed in, and you cannot tell which is which. The English & Language Usage section contributes 33 of those scored questions.
How to approach the section
Pacing. About 60 seconds per question — the tightest of the four sections.
English is the shortest section and the fastest per question, but it is also the most learnable in a short space of time: the rules are finite. Subject-verb agreement, punctuation and commonly confused words come up reliably, so a few focused hours here often move a score more than the same hours spent on science content.
The mistake that costs the most marks
Trusting what sounds right. Everyday speech breaks several of the rules being tested, so an option can sound completely natural and still be wrong. Apply the rule rather than the ear, especially on agreement questions where the subject is separated from its verb.

Which word correctly completes the sentence? 'The nurse gave the medication to the patient and _____.'
Correct answer: B. 'Me' is the object pronoun needed after the preposition 'to.' Test: 'The nurse gave the medication to me' (not 'to I').
- A. 'I' is a subject pronoun. After a preposition, use object pronouns.
- C. 'Myself' is reflexive — used only when subject and object are the same person.
- D. 'Mine' is possessive and doesn't fit this structure.
- Question 2
Which word correctly completes the sentence? 'The number of patients _____ increased this week.'
Correct answer: B. 'The number' is the subject (singular). 'The number has increased' is correct. Note: 'A number of patients have arrived' uses plural because 'a number of' means 'several.'
- A. 'Have' is plural, but 'the number' is singular.
- C. 'Are' doesn't work with 'increased' in this tense.
- D. 'Were' is past tense plural, wrong with singular 'the number.'
- Question 3
Which sentence correctly uses a semicolon?
Correct answer: B. A semicolon joins two closely related independent clauses. Both parts are complete sentences.
- A. 'After taking the medication' is a fragment — semicolons cannot join a clause to a fragment.
- C. Cannot separate subject from verb with a semicolon.
- D. The semicolon is placed incorrectly mid-sentence.
- Question 4
Which sentence is grammatically correct?
Correct answer: C. 'I' is the correct subject pronoun. Remove 'the doctor and' to test: 'I reviewed the test results' is correct.
- A. 'Me' is an object pronoun, not a subject pronoun.
- B. 'Me' cannot be used as a subject.
- D. 'Myself' is reflexive — only used when subject and object are the same person.

Which sentence correctly uses a comma after an introductory element?
Correct answer: B. A comma follows an introductory phrase. 'After the surgery' is introductory, so a comma goes after it.
- A. Missing the comma after the introductory phrase.
- C. Comma is misplaced after 'After' instead of after the full phrase.
- D. Comma incorrectly separates subject from verb.
