What is on the Mathematics section
The TEAS 7 has 170 questions in total, 150 of which are scored — the other 20 are unscored pretest items mixed in, and you cannot tell which is which. The Mathematics section contributes 34 of those scored questions.
How to approach the section
Pacing. About 90 seconds per question — the most generous of the four sections.
A basic four-function calculator is available during the Mathematics section, so arithmetic speed matters less than setting problems up correctly. Most lost marks come from misreading what is being asked or mismatching units, not from calculation. Write the setup down before you compute anything.
The mistake that costs the most marks
Answering the wrong question. Word problems frequently ask for the change, the remainder, or the per-unit amount, while the intermediate value you calculated on the way is offered as a distractor. Re-read the final sentence of the problem before choosing.

Correct answer: B. Numbers greater than 4 on a die: 5 and 6 (2 outcomes). Total outcomes: 6. Probability = 2/6 = 1/3.
- A. 1/6 is the probability of rolling one specific number (e.g., just 5 or just 6).
- C. 1/2 = 3/6, which would be the probability of rolling greater than 3 (rolling 4, 5, or 6).
- D. 2/3 = 4/6, which would be the probability of rolling 3 or greater.

A pie chart shows the following breakdown of a hospital's annual budget: Staff Salaries 55%, Equipment 20%, Supplies 15%, Utilities 10%. If the total budget is $2,000,000, how much is spent on equipment?
Correct answer: B. Equipment = 20% of $2,000,000 = 0.20 × $2,000,000 = $400,000.
- A. $200,000 = 10% of the budget (utilities), not 20% (equipment).
- C. $300,000 = 15% of the budget (supplies), not 20% (equipment).
- D. $1,100,000 = 55% of the budget (staff salaries), not 20% (equipment).

A patient's blood pressure readings over 4 visits were: 128/82, 134/86, 122/78, and 140/90. What was the average systolic blood pressure?
Correct answer: A. Systolic values (top numbers): 128, 134, 122, 140. Sum = 524. Mean = 524 ÷ 4 = 131 mmHg.
- B. 84 is close to the average diastolic pressure (82+86+78+90=336, 336/4=84), not systolic.
- C. 128 is one individual reading, not the average.
- D. 136 is not the correct mean of 128, 134, 122, and 140.
- Question 4
What is the surface area of a cube with sides of 4 cm?
Correct answer: B. A cube has 6 faces, each with area s² = 4² = 16 cm². Total surface area = 6 × 16 = 96 cm².
- A. 64 = 4³, which is the volume, not the surface area.
- C. 24 = 6 × 4, which multiplies 6 faces by the side length instead of the side length squared.
- D. 16 = 4² = the area of one face, not all 6 faces.
- Question 5
Two events are independent. Event A has a probability of 1/3, and Event B has a probability of 1/4. What is the probability that both events occur?
Correct answer: B. For independent events, P(A and B) = P(A) × P(B) = 1/3 × 1/4 = 1/12.
- A. 7/12 = 1/3 + 1/4 = 4/12 + 3/12, which adds probabilities. Adding gives P(A or B) for mutually exclusive events, not P(A and B).
- C. 1/7 = 1/(3+4), which adds denominators — an incorrect operation.
- D. 2/7 does not result from correct probability calculations with 1/3 and 1/4.
